How it works

Three Steps

  1. STEP 01

    Tell us the basics

Share your ZIP code, age range, and current Medicare status.

  2. STEP 02

    Connect with a licensed agent

We'll match you with a licensed insurance agent in our network who can answer questions about the plan types available where you live.

  3. STEP 03

    Decide on your own timeline

Review the options with your agent. Enroll if a plan fits your needs — or don't. There's never any obligation.

Reference

Types of Medicare Coverage

Medicare coverage comes in several forms. Here's a general overview. A licensed agent can explain which of these are available in your area and how they compare.

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)

Part A generally covers inpatient hospital care. Part B generally covers outpatient medical services. Original Medicare is administered by the federal government.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide your Part A and Part B coverage and may include additional coverage. Plan availability and specifics vary by county.

Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. It's available as a standalone plan or as part of certain Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement policies are sold by private insurance companies to help pay some of the costs Original Medicare doesn't cover. Medigap policies work alongside Original Medicare.

Special Needs Plans (SNPs)

Special Needs Plans are a type of Medicare Advantage plan designed for people who meet specific eligibility criteria, such as those who have both Medicare and Medicaid, live in an institution, or have certain chronic conditions.

Timing

When You Can Enroll

Medicare has specific windows for enrolling in or changing coverage. A licensed agent can help you determine which applies to your situation.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

A seven-month window around your 65th birthday — the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

October 15 through December 7 each year. During AEP you can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Changes generally take effect January 1.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

January 1 through March 31. If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

Certain life events — such as moving, losing other coverage, or changes in Medicaid eligibility — may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period outside the windows above.

Under 65 with a disability

People under 65 may become eligible for Medicare after a qualifying period of Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, or upon diagnosis of certain conditions.
